While they didn’t come out on top, a team representing the Gainsborough Curling Club still had a good showing at the 12-team Jr. Women’s Provincial Championship held Jan. 5 to 8 at the Moose Jaw Curling Centre.
The lead and second on the team – Rheanelle McKinnon of Alameda (a third year Kinesiology student at the U of R) and Renee Boutin, Alida (a second year Business Administration student at the U of R) - are former graduates of OPHS. The team was skipped by Justine Hutton of Redvers with her sister Katrina playing third. Steve Smith of Gainsborough was the coach.
Renee said they won two of the five games they played in the round robin, but their record was not good enough to advance to the playoff.
The field was highly competitive, with two of the teams in their pool, skipped by Kristen Steifel and Brooklyn Lemon, both representing Saskatoon, playing against each other in the final.
Renee said it will be exciting to follow how the Steifel team does at the Canadian Championship which will be held in Napanee, Ontario Feb. 4-12, knowing that a few weeks prior she had curled against them in Moose Jaw.
